Before the end of the summer term, a local housebuilder surprised the children at Wintringham Primary Academy by building a new sandpit area in the playground and donating around 25 new books to the school library.

The team at Durkan Homes used donated materials such as piping and pallets to create a bespoke sandpit for the school children to enjoy and gifted £250 for new books.

Robert Thompson, production director at Durkan Homes, added: “We’re always keen to engage with our local communities and provide fun and educational events for local people to enjoy. Our site manager Barry worked hard to bring together the materials to build the outdoor sandpit area and we’re pleased the children are enjoying this space.”

The books were provided by Olly Gardner, who runs Olly’s Bookstore, an organisation that sources funding from local companies to help give students access to new books.

Both donations were unveiled in a ceremony at the school before the end of term. Mr Maxim Hall, assistant headteacher at Wintringham Primary Academy, said: “Donations from companies like Durkan make a huge difference to what we’re able to offer our pupils.

Paul Murfin from Urban&Civic, Wintringham master developer, said: “The housebuilders at Wintringham form an important part of the community and it’s great to see donations like those from Durkan Homes supporting the local primary school. We hope the children will have lots of fun playing in the sandpit and enjoy the new books when they come back from the summer holidays.”
