Cambridge Road works

Work is being carried out to upgrade Cambridge Road B1428 between the A428 junction and the Bret Road roundabout at Wintringham. This will support the eastern expansion of St Neots and provide a new gateway to the town, as well as better connections for existing and new residents at Wintringham and Monksfields, the next phase of Love’s Farm.

Who is carrying out the works?

The Cambridge Road upgrade works will be carried out by NATTA Building Company.

What works are being done?

Work is being carried out to upgrade Cambridge Road B1428 between the A428 junction and the Bret Road roundabout at Wintringham. This will support the eastern expansion of St Neots and provide a new gateway to the town, as well as better connections for existing and new residents at Wintringham and Monksfields, the next phase of Love’s Farm.

The upgrades will include a roundabout at the Pelham Road junction (to replace the existing T-junction), three new junctions to serve the future Monksfields development, new cycle paths, bus stops/shelters and pedestrian crossing points. The new design will also make the route safer for all users, and will enable a 30mph speed limit to be implemented when complete.

We have worked with the Highway Authority and developed our programme of works, it is a long programme, but will ensure all works are carried out in one go, without the need for additional works at a later stage.

When will the works start?

The work will be carried out in phases from 17 November 2023 over the next 36 weeks, with a six week break over the Christmas period. There will be some preliminary works ahead of this, for ground preparation and setting up of compounds.

From 17 November until 30 November traffic management will be in place. Two-way traffic lights will be in use on the eastbound carriageway from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Beyond this date, regular updates on changes in traffic management will be communicated as the scheme progresses.

The working hours are from 7.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, and 7.30am to 1.00pm on Saturdays. Temporary traffic management will remain in place throughout this period, although no Sunday or Bank

Holiday working is currently planned. Any change to this will be communicated at the time.

FAQ's

The works have been designed to bring together a whole series of upgrades to road and cycle routes, bus stops and pedestrian crossings, drainage and utility connections: which otherwise would have been done in a number of different work streams. It has involved extensive planning between Urban&Civic and L&Q as the developers of Wintringham and Monksfields, as well as County Council and National Highways teams, and a range of statutory utility partners.

The works will deliver a series of benefits and mark the second phase of works to upgrade Cambridge Road as the main Eastern Gateway to St Neots.

The works include:

The creation of three new junctions to create entrances to the new development of Monksfields.
The creation of a roundabout at the current Cambridge Road / Pelham Road junction, to enhance access to Wintringham, as well provide an additional access to Monksfields.
Two pedestrian crossings.
Cycle infrastructure on the Monksfields side of the road to mirror the infrastructure put in place for Wintringham.

Through the delivery of these works, the speed limit will also be reduced and a safer, slower environment created for walkers, cyclists as well as drivers to use.

While much of the work is essential to deliver the utility and infrastructure capacity needed for the new developments, it has been designed to also benefit existing residents, as well as create the right environment for new residents. Fundamental to this will be the new 30mph speed limit, and to provide greater opportunities for active travel links with safe cycling and walking and more access to bus stops and services.

No closures of Cambridge Road and subsequent diversions are required for the early phases of this work. There will be requirements towards the end of the works, when the new parts of carriageways are connected to the existing. Pelham Road Junction will need to be closed as part of these works and a diversion will be put in place via Bret Road and Gedney Way. Residents will be notified of the exact times in the monthly Residents’ Forum meetings, through door drops or social media posts.

The main compound for these works is on the Monksfields Development and should have minimal impact on existing residents. There will be a small plant storage area near to Paine Walk, Wintringham, which is needed to reduce the impact of machinery needing to cross the road on a regular basis. This will cause a slightly increased noise disturbance, but this will be kept to a minimum and will be well within noise impact guidance. Update: 27 October : The plant storage area may no longer be required in this area.
