Sustainable transport and active travel is a key priority for the Wintringham development. The brand new community which will deliver 2,800 homes, two new primary schools, a district centre, 63,500m2 of employment floorspace and 9km of cycleways, will be delivered over a number of phases and as part of a new Gateway Expansion to the east of Cambridgeshire’s largest market town, St Neots.
Getting people out of their cars, and walking and cycling more, or using buses to get around for work and leisure, is a vital part of creating healthy and sustainable communities and helping people lead more active lives. Before residents moved in Urban&Civic, Wintringham’s masterdeveloper, appointed specialist sustainable transport consultancy Go Travel Solutions to support new residents to walk and cycle more and support the development team to deliver Wintringham’s commitments to sustainable travel.
Since October 2020, Go Travel solutions have implemented a number of initiatives which are available to residents through the LocalGo scheme, including awarding a prize to the first resident to join the online platform which connects people to discounts, incentives, vouchers, as well as information and support to encourage people out of using their cars.
Jemma Fry has been a resident at Wintringham since January 2021 and decided to join the LocalGo scheme to benefit from a 20% discount on a home EV charging point from EO Charging, which will allow her to charge her new electric car. Jemma said; “I really like LocalGo’s sustainable travel initiative. When we emerge from lockdown and we can travel more freely this is really going to help me save money. The scheme encourages use of public transport and energy-efficient personal vehicles so it helps the environment too.”
Go Travel Solutions awarded Jemma with a £25 voucher to spend at local business, Shume bottle emporium.
Membership for LocalGo is free for residents and includes support to develop a free Personal Travel Plan (PTP) for your most regular journey, normally to work, to help you do it in a low carbon and active way.
John Keenan added: “We’ve had a lot of interest so far in the incentives and vouchers available to people, and we’re also keen to hear from residents about the services they would like so we can continue to work with Urban&Civic to make sure Wintringham really is an active and sustainable community. With St Neots a short cycle or walk away, and the rail and bus stops so close, we really do have an amazing opportunity here to do something special.”
